“Devastating news as we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, world record holder and Kenyan athletics icon,” Odinga said as he mourned the passing of the bright talent.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana,” said sporting director Coe, highlighting the huge vacuum Kiptum’s demise has left in the sport. We will truly miss this amazing athlete who leaves behind an amazing legacy.”

Police said the car apparently went off the road into a ditch and then hit a tree. The third person in the vehicle, a lady, was also seriously injured and was taken to hospital. The fact that Kiptum’s father and other family members were present to identify his body served as yet further evidence of the depth of the tragedy.

Another athlete, Milcah Chemos, was also present at the hospital morgue where their bodies were taken. She broke the heartbreaking news to a news organization. “I have no words to explain the loss of Kelvin,” she revealed.
