Pierce Brosnan Held His Daughter’s Hand Through Her Battle with Cancer Until Her Last Breath

To most of us, Pierce Brosnan is best known as the cool, collected, and incredibly attractive agent of James Bond.

During his more than three years of career, he starred in Dante’s Peak, The Thomas Crown Affair, and most recently Mamma Mia.

But there is a tragic story that put his family through hardships and motivated the handsome Irishman to do philanthropic work.

Over the course of two decades, the 66-year-old woman suffered two devastating losses: the first through widowhood and the second through the loss of her daughter to the same disease that killed her mother 22 years ago.

The Hollywood actor from the United States was in love with Cassandra Harris when they first met and “never thought for a second that she was someone I would spend 17 years of my life with”.

Cassandra, on the other hand, thought otherwise of the budding star: “There was this funny-looking man with this short haircut.” Of her first meeting with Brosnan, she noted, “But we had a lot in common… and once we started talking, we never stopped” (Lessons Learned in Life).

After three years of dating, the two married in 1980. They had a son together and were inseparable. After Cassandra’s father died in 1986, Brosnan even adopted her children, Chris and Charlotte, from a previous marriage.

Despite an unusual fatherless upbringing and his mother eventually leaving him with relatives in Ireland to pursue her career in London, family life was easy for Brosnan. Decades later, however, he was a happily contented husband, father, and stepfather.

We all got along great as a family. First I was Pierce, then Dad Pierce, and then just Dad. Chris and Charlotte have been incredible in my life,” Brosnan told the Mirror.

However, after 11 years of marriage, Cassandra’s happy relationship ended when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the late 1980s and died in 1991.

In Mexico, Brosnan rediscovered happiness with American journalist Keely Shaye Smith, his second wife. They have two boys together from their 2001 marriage.

But 22 years after the death of his first wife, he suffered another tragedy when his adopted daughter Charlotte tragically died of ovarian cancer.

“Believe me, I don’t see the glass as half full.

“Sometimes I have an Irish black dog sitting next to me, sullen and brooding,” he told Esquire magazine.

To overcome the loss, the celebrity returned to her first passion – painting. Today, she not only promotes cancer awareness and serves as an ambassador for UNICEF Ireland, but also distributes proceeds from the sale of her paintings to organizations that support women’s health, children’s health, and the environment.

At the age of 41, Charlotte died, leaving behind her husband, Alex, as well as her children, Isabella and Lucas.

“Watching someone you love have their life eaten away bit by bit by this insidious disease, that kind of grief becomes an indelible part of your psyche,” Brosnan reportedly remarked during a speech at the Stand Up to Cancer event.
