Harry Defina, another resident, shared his hypothesis regarding the hole. NBC Miami said he witnessed the man digging the hole about half an hour before the children started playing in it.
“As I was walking along the shore, I noticed a man who had dug a large hole that reached up to his chest.
I turned to face him and he turned back to me. It didn’t occur to me to approach him and tell him not to do that,” Defina noted. They didn’t dig that hole. It ended up being about eighteen feet by six feet, and it was huge.”
Defina, who was clearly distraught, described the terrifying moment the children were buried in the hole. “I noticed the children in the hole. I saw the top of the girl’s head, and that was about all I saw of the boy. I won’t be able to continue this.”
