Elinor had to be constantly accompanied by an adult on set because she was still a young actress when she started her acting career in California. Her mother Doris quit her job to be there for her as her father was away and she was working full time.
Elinor made guest appearances on television after “Father Knows Best” ended, including “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Dr. Kildare,” “Star Trek” and “Mork & Mindy.”
The 86-year-old actress has appeared in more than 70 films and TV series, including “Pretty Woman” and “Winter Wonderland.”
At the age of 19, Elinor tied the knot for the first time. Although she is an adult by legal definition, she claimed to feel more like a young teenager. She believed that having a child and getting married would make her feel more mature.
“I was only 19, but I felt like I was still 13,” she recalled. “I haven’t had a chance to grow up yet. My high school friends were few and far between. I believed I would grow up when I got married and had kids.”
She thus accepted a man’s marriage proposal. Coincidentally, it was Richard Smith, the sound engineer from “Father Knows Best.”
“During the movie we saw together, he whispered in my ear, ‘I love you and I’d like to marry you.'” I just laughed and said, “Okay.”
Brian, her first child, was born to her and him. However, in 1961, six years later, they divorced.
She later married television producer Harry Ackerman in 1962. They had three boys together. Despite the fact that he was 20 years her senior, they had nearly 30 years of happy marriage before he died in 1991.
She remarried the following year to Lou Genevrino, her current husband and contractor. She spent the last ten years without performing.
She never thought about acting, but she has had a very fruitful and busy career.
